Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP)
On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 including $1.5 billion for a
Homelessness Prevention Fund. Funding for this program, called the
Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) is
distributed based on the formula used for the Emergency Shelter
Grants Program.
HPRP is the main funding source of homeless prevention. Since
its inception in September 2009, agencies have helped hundreds of
households. These agencies are listed on the Homeless
Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing pages.
The purpose of the Homelessness Prevention part is to
provide homelessness prevention assistance to households who would
otherwise become homeless, many due to the recent economic crisis.
The purpose of the Rapid Re-Housing part is to provide
assistance to rapidly re-house persons who are recently
homeless as defined by section 103 of the McKinney-Vento Homeless
Assistance Act (42 U.S.C. 11302). The program is held by these income
limits.
If you are in need of assistance for yourself or your family,
our partner agencies are ready to work with you. Services depend on
your current housing status. According to
HUD, you are considered homeless if you "lack a fixed, regular,
and adequate nighttime residence," or have "a primary nighttime
residence" at a temporary shelter, institutionalization, or "a
public or private place not designed for, or ordinarily used as, a
regular sleeping accommodation." If this describes your current
situation, please click on Rapid Re-Housing services. If this
does not apply to you but you are in danger of being homeless
without assistance, please click on Homeless Prevention services.
For agencies in the Dallas area, see the Metro Dallas
Homeless Alliance HPRP Directory.
